I have been working a lot on getting a new version of MooTyper ready for release. Since it has a major change in the way it "looks" and in the way it works, the version will jump from 3.4.3 to 3.5.0.

This new versions will have new settings for:

  1. cursor color - For each MooTyper activity, the teacher can use the site default color setting for the cursor, or set a different color for the current MooTyper activity. Makes it possible to color coordinate with the course theme colors or set colors suitable for the students visual acuity.
  2. error color - For each MooTyper activity, the teacher can use the site default color for incorrectly typed letters, or set a different color for the current MooTyper activity. Makes it possible to color coordinate with the course theme colors or set colors suitable for the students visual acuity.
  3. text background color - For each MooTyper activity, the teacher can use the site default color for the background color of the text to type, or set a different color for the current MooTyper activity. Makes it possible to color coordinate with the course theme colors or set colors suitable for the students visual acuity.
  4. count mistakes - For each MooTyper activity, the teacher can use the site default for how to count multiple keystrokes that are the same wrong letter. Effectively, this gives MooTyper another "Typing Mode" useful for beginning students.

Some other changes:

  • The whole layout of the main view is now more compact making it more user friendly for smaller size computer screens.
  • Text to type default colors are now black when waiting to be typed, green when typed correctly, and red if typed incorrectly.
  • The text-to-type font size has been increased to 20px and bold which makes it easier see, especially for someone like me with my vision problems..
  • In previous versions, the status bar was only partially updated after the last keystroke of an exercise.
    • Time was ok
    • Progress was not updated and always one short of the total. - Fixed now.
    • Mistakes was ok
    • Precision calculation was not always correct due to not taking in to account the settings for continuous typing and counting mistyped spaces. Fixed now, I think. Still need some more testing to make sure.
    • Hits per minute was ok.
    • WPM - showed 0 until end of the lesson. Now updates live, like the other indicators.
  • The textarea where students typed, is now hidden and typing progress is shown in the text to type area by the moving cursor.
  • Texttotype area now scrolls as needed, to show hidden lines of longer exercises.
  • When creating new exercises, you can do them as long paragraphs, like word processors do, with new lines only needed at the end of a paragraph, or at the end of the exercise.
  • When a student is finished typing an exercise, the the text-to-type area reveals a scroll bar so the student can scroll up and down and see where they made mistakes. The number of mistakes you can see depends on the typing mode, with continuous letting you see all of them. With continuous off, you can only see where a mistake occurred but not necessarily how many occurred there.
  • Error locations are highlighted so the student knows where they made mistakes.
  • Status bar, text area, and keyboard backgrounds all have the same drop shadow for a more consistent look.

From the time of this posting, it will be a few more days before I post the new version on Moodle due to the amount of testing I need to do. Making sure it works on all versions of Moodle from 2.7 to 3.5 is time consuming. (Yes, I am testing on the Moodle 3.5 development code, too.)
